The Foundations of human happiness: Self-regulation & Self-relational attunement
An experiential course in 8 parts

Course structure and summary content (syllabus details subject to change):
Day 1: Neurocognition
Part 1 - Somatic Science™ is a titrated metacognitive approach to healing the nervous system
Part 2 - The Somatic Science™ approach to self-regulation is dialectical and self-relational
Part 3 - Experimentation: Understanding metacognition, exteroception, interoception &
apperception of experiential objects
Part 4 - How the nervous system responds to ACEs and exposure to other chronic stressors - The threat
response cycle, the Polyvagal Theory and Somatic Science™ views
Day 2: Experimentation

Part 1 - Experimentation - Bringing our system to here & now: Understanding the experience of sense
perceptions, bodily sensations and apperceptions
Part 2 - Class discussion: ACEs & neuroplasticity
Part 3 - Experimentation - Titrated interoception, exteroception & apperception with self-relational touch
Day 3: Neurocognition

Part 1 - Somatic Science™ uses our experiences as perceptual objects
Part 2 - The Somatic Science™ understanding of what the parts of the self are, how ACEs generate
them within the nervous system and how Somatic Science™ supports their transition from implicit
cognition to explicit metacognition
Part 3 - Experimentation - Witnessing the operation of the autonomic mind
Part 4 - Understanding the connections between conditioning, resistance, the autonomic mind and self-
regulation to here and now
Day 4: Experimentation

Part 1 - Experimentation - Bringing our system to here & now is a form of up-to-date conditioning
Part 2 - Class discussion: Establishing clarity between past and up-to-date conditioning
Part 3 - Experimentation - Using titrated interoception, exteroception & apperception with self-relational
touch for self-relational attunement and self-regulation
Day 5: Neurocognition

Part 1 - Reviewing our understanding of cognition, metacognition and neurocognition
Part 2 - Experimentation - Witnessing the distinct operation of the autonomic & psychological minds
with titrated metacognition & neurocognition
Part 3 - Understanding self-relational attunement: crossing the thresholds of the threat response cycle via
self-relational attunement
Day 6: Experimentation

Part 1 - Experimentation - Bringing our system to here & now
Part 2 - Class discussion: The regulated experience of the present moment requires metacognition and
pause of the threat response cycle
Part 3 - Experimentation - Learn to detect, notice, acknowledge and relate to the implicit objects of
our experience: Rendering implicit, non-relational objects explicit and relational
Day 7: Neurocognition

Part 1 - Reviewing the Somatic Science™ understanding of what the parts of the self are, how ACEs
generate them within the nervous system, and how Somatic Science™ supports their transition from
implicit cognition to explicit metacognition
Part 2 - Experimentation - Witnessing the operation of the autonomic mind with titrated metacognition
& neurocognition
Part 3 - Understanding self-relational attunement: crossing the threshold of the threat response cycle
via self-relational attunement
Part 4 - Experimentation / Questions
Day 8: Experimentation
Part 1 - Experimentation - Guided experience with self-relational touch and metacognition
Part 2 - Class discussion: distinguishing autonomic from psychological from metacognitive thought
Part 3 - Open sharing
